Chapter Thirteen

Grim

There are only two routes into Mercy. The main road into town and the back road. Since the back road takes us to the other side of town, I drive in behind my brothers. The road is lined with tall trees, casting shade over us from the sun. I’m glad it’s a nice day. It’ll give Nora a nicer first impression of my hometown. There’s maybe a solid month of nice weather around here, the rest of the time it’s rain or snow. Lowering my window, the smell of pine and earth assaults me. It feels like decades since I was last here. The mountain comes into view and Nora gasps.

Taking my eyes off the road, I glance across at her and she’s mesmerised.

“That’s where we’re going?” she asks for clarification.

“Yep. That’s your new home.”

“It’s beautiful.”

Not as beautiful as her but I keep that little observation to myself. The guys speed up but I keep my speed level so Nora can take in as much as she can. I find myself excited to be back because I can show Nora the great spots around here. The same places I grew bored with before I left.

We start to climb the mountain roads and Nora asks, “How do you get used to beauty like this?”

I don’t have an answer for her. I was born here. I didn’t know any different. But when I look back on this moment, I wish I told her I hoped she’d never get used to it, that when she woke up safe every day, she looked out the window, took in the beauty, and smiled. I want this place to make her smile at any opportunity it gets.

My Mercy brothers are waiting for us, and I give Nora a few moments before shutting off the engine.

“The brothers here are just like the ones back in Willow’s Peak. They’ll be able to look out for you just as well.”

She tears her gaze away from the guys and pins her gaze on me. “I don’t doubt it.”

She undoes her belt and takes a long breath.

“Are you ready to start the rest of your life?”

“Though I’m terrified, it’s overdue.”

I jump out of the truck and stretch my arms above my head before rounding the truck and opening Nora’s door. I offer my hand and enjoy the few moments her skin touches mine before she’s on her feet and withdraws.

The feel of home covers me but it’s her touch that scorches me.

I stay close to her as we walk toward everyone, and Tack is the first to pull me in for a hug.

“It’s damn good to see you, brother.”

“It hasn’t been that long. Have you missed me that much?” I laugh.

“What can I say, your absence around here is noted.”

We pull apart and he smiles his stupid wicked smirk to the side of me.

“You must be Nora? Leo said to expect you. I’m Tack.” He holds his hand out and I half expect the fucker to kiss her hand, but they simply shake hands, and she inches closer to me.
